Around the District

Bronze Medal Schools

Wow! I' m very pleased to announce that both Heppner Jr/Sr High and Riverside Jr/Sr High were listed among the best high schools in the nation by U.S News and World Report. In the state of Oregon only 33 high schools were medal winners. To have two winners from our district is extraordinary! Congratulations and thanks for all you do to the RJSH staff and the HJSH staff.

October 12, 2009 - H1N1 & Seasonal Flu Update

Dear Parents,

The Flu season has arrived in Morrow County.  Normally average daily attendance in our schools runs at approximately 95%.  Today, Monday, Oct 12, the percent present in our schools is in the high eighties to low nineties.  The exception is Heppner Jr/Sr High where 30% of the student body is not in school today.  Parents around the county are reporting their children are suffering from fever and flu like symptoms.

We consulted with both county and state public health officials today.  Their advice was the same as you will find on our H1N1 advisories on this and school web pages.  Keep children home if they have a fever or display other flu-like symptoms.  Cover that cough and wash hands frequently.  They do not recommend closing schools.

Our schools will continue our rigorous cleaning routines.  We will continue to communicate with public health officials and keep parents informed.

Sincerely,
Mark Burrows
Superintendent

October 5, 2009

Wow, don’t you love these fall days, crisp mornings followed by bright, sunny afternoons?

It was a good weekend. While we weren’t universally victorious, I noted much success on the fields and in the gyms at all 3 of our secondary schools. Amy Ditton conducted successful peer coaching sessions with Irrigon teachers Friday. Amy has already done the workshop in Boardman and will make up the session with Heppner teachers in the near future.

Are you aware that the Oregon Department of Education has changed the format for school report cards? The old report card yielded 5 possible “grades.” The new one gives schools only 3 possibilities, Needs improvement; satisfactory; or outstanding. The new card recognizes student growth and rewards credit for schools successfully educating sub groups such as limited English proficiency and special education. I’m pleased to say, that thanks to your hard work and caring MCSD did pretty good. All our schools were satisfactory. Two were judged outstanding!

  • Heppner Elementary School - Consistently produces high academic results! Please congratulate the staff for their hard work and dedication to the pursuit of excellence!
  • Riverside Jr/Sr High. - Wow! Riverside goes where secondary schools rarely get to go, especially secondary schools with large numbers of English language learners and low income students. Student academic growth at Riverside was outstanding. Please congratulate the staff on their exceptional work.

We had two other schools, A.C. Houghton and Heppner High School come within 2 points of making “Outstanding” as well. This is a big deal when there are only 3 marks possible on a 100 point scale. Congrats to everyone on a good showing district wide.
